Supervising Service Staff: As a Restaurant Captain, you would oversee the front-of-house service staff, including servers, hosts/hostesses, and bussers. You would assign duties, provide guidance, and ensure that all team members adhere to service standards and procedures. Guest Relations: A significant part of your role involves interacting with guests to ensure a positive dining experience. You would greet patrons, assist with seating arrangements, handle reservations, and address any special requests or concerns. Order Management: You would coordinate with the kitchen staff to ensure prompt and accurate order preparation and delivery. This involves relaying orders, monitoring ticket times, and communicating any modifications or special instructions from guests to the kitchen team. Upselling and Recommending: Restaurant Captains often play a role in promoting menu items, specials, and beverages to guests. You would be knowledgeable about the menu offerings and capable of making recommendations based on guest preferences and dietary restrictions. Training and Development: In this role, you may be responsible for training new service staff members and providing ongoing coaching and feedback to existing team members. This includes teaching service techniques, menu knowledge, and customer service skills. Shift Management: As a key member of the restaurant management team, you would assist in coordinating daily operations during your shift. This involves opening and closing procedures, managing reservations and seating arrangements, and handling any issues that arise. Maintaining Standards: You would ensure that the restaurant maintains cleanliness, organization, and adherence to health and safety regulations. This includes monitoring sanitation practices, inspecting dining areas, and addressing any maintenance issues promptly. Handling Payments: Restaurant Captains often assist with processing payments, handling cash transactions, and closing out checks. You would ensure accuracy in billing, handle any discrepancies, and provide excellent service during the payment process. Conflict Resolution: In the event of guest complaints or issues, you would step in to resolve conflicts and ensure guest satisfaction. This may involve listening to concerns, offering solutions or compensation when appropriate, and escalating issues to management if necessary. Team Communication: Effective communication is essential in this role, both with guests and with other restaurant staff members. You would relay important information, updates, and directives from management to the service team and vice versa. Sales and Revenue Management: Restaurant Captains may be responsible for monitoring sales performance, tracking covers, and identifying opportunities to increase revenue through upselling, promotions, or suggestive selling techniques.
