Job description

Preoperative Preparation: Assist in preparing the operating room for surgical procedures by ensuring that all necessary equipment, instruments, and supplies are available and properly sterilized. Set up surgical tables, lights, and equipment according to the specific requirements of each procedure. Sterilization and Instrumentation: Sterilize surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies using autoclaves, chemical sterilization methods, or other sterile processing techniques. Assemble instrument trays and surgical packs, and arrange them for use during surgical procedures. Assisting Surgeons: Assist surgeons and surgical team members during surgical procedures by passing instruments, supplies, and equipment as needed. Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and maintain a sterile field to prevent contamination during the procedure. Maintaining Sterile Field: Maintain a sterile environment in the operating room by adhering to aseptic techniques and infection control protocols. Follow strict sterile gowning and gloving procedures and monitor the integrity of sterile barriers throughout the surgical procedure. Instrumentation and Equipment Handling: Handle surgical instruments, devices, and equipment safely and efficiently during procedures. Organize and arrange instruments on sterile tables or mayo stands for easy access and use by the surgical team. Patient Positioning and Draping: Assist in positioning patients on the operating table and preparing them for surgery by applying surgical drapes and positioning devices to expose the surgical site while maintaining patient comfort and safety. Anesthesia Support: Assist anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists in preparing anesthesia equipment, monitoring patient vital signs, and positioning patients for anesthesia induction and maintenance during surgical procedures. Wound Closure and Dressing Application: Assist in wound closure and dressing application at the conclusion of surgical procedures. Hand instruments to surgeons for suturing, staple placement, or wound closure techniques, and apply sterile dressings or bandages as directed. Postoperative Clean-Up: Assist in cleaning and disinfecting the operating room after surgical procedures, including removing and disposing of soiled equipment, linens, and supplies. Clean and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment for reuse or storage. Emergency Response: Assist in emergency situations or surgical complications by providing support to the surgical team, helping to troubleshoot equipment issues, and responding to urgent requests for additional instruments or supplies. Documentation and Record-Keeping: Document relevant information and activities related to surgical procedures, instrument usage, and patient care in surgical records, electronic medical records (EMR), or other documentation systems. Continuing Education and Training: Participate in ongoing education, training, and professional development activities to stay updated on advances in surgical technology, techniques, and equipment. Maintain certification and licensure requirements as applicable in your jurisdiction.
