Patient Preparation: Cardiology Technicians prepare patients for diagnostic procedures, explaining the purpose of the test, obtaining medical histories, and ensuring patient comfort and safety. Electrocardiography (ECG/EKG): They perform electrocardiograms to record and analyze the electrical activity of the heart. Cardiology Technicians apply electrodes to the patient's chest, limbs, and sometimes the torso to capture heart rhythms and abnormalities. Holter Monitoring: Cardiology Technicians apply and remove Holter monitors, which are portable devices that continuously record the heart's electrical activity over a period of 24 to 48 hours. They analyze recorded data for abnormalities and prepare reports for cardiologists. Stress Testing: They assist in conducting stress tests (such as treadmill tests or pharmacological stress tests) to evaluate cardiovascular function during physical exertion. Cardiology Technicians monitor patients' vital signs, ECG readings, and symptoms during stress testing procedures. Echocardiography: Cardiology Technicians assist with echocardiograms, using ultrasound equipment to create images of the heart's structure, valves, and blood flow patterns. They may help with patient positioning, probe placement, and image acquisition under the supervision of a cardiologist. Cardiac Catheterization: In some settings, Cardiology Technicians may assist cardiologists during cardiac catheterization procedures. They help with patient preparation, sterile field setup, monitoring vital signs, and handling catheters and imaging equipment. Pacemaker Monitoring: Cardiology Technicians perform pacemaker checks and monitor implanted devices to ensure proper function and battery life. They review pacemaker readings, detect abnormalities, and report findings to cardiologists for further evaluation. Patient Education: They educate patients about diagnostic procedures, equipment operation, and post-procedure care instructions. Cardiology Technicians explain the purpose of tests, answer questions, and alleviate patient concerns regarding cardiovascular testing. Equipment Maintenance: Cardiology Technicians maintain and calibrate cardiac monitoring equipment, ECG machines, ultrasound devices, and other specialized tools used in diagnostic procedures. They ensure equipment is in good working condition and troubleshoot technical issues as needed. Documentation and Reporting: They document patient information, test results, and procedural details accurately in medical records or electronic health records (EHR). Cardiology Technicians prepare reports for cardiologists, summarizing findings and observations from diagnostic tests. Infection Control and Safety: They adhere to infection control protocols, sterilization procedures, and safety guidelines to prevent cross-contamination and ensure patient and staff safety during cardiac procedures. Team Collaboration: Cardiology Technicians collaborate with cardiologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care, discuss test results, and contribute to multidisciplinary treatment plans for patients with cardiovascular conditions.
